18th Street Community Park

18th Street Community Park

An incredible park located on the West Side with brilliant functional artistic seating, concrete fingers that extend into the park surrounded by planted greenspace, a chess board and an all around beautiful setting.

This is the greatest fence in the city. It's a work of art fabricated by the UB School of Architecture and Planning under the direction of Brad Wales. Each pillar or totem was made by a UB student, while kids from the neighborhood added the artistic ceramic tiles. Two revolving gates were recently added and benches. A horseshoe pit, chess table and concrete fingers that extend out into the park are coming next.

On one side of the fence is the Urban Roots yard. On the other is a neighborhood park. The project was formulated by UB Professor Brad Wales, who is the mastermind behind the Small Built Works Project effort. Other examples of work can be found in Allentown and in the Kleinhans District. They range from bus depots to bike racks to public poetry to a spinning house facade.
