New Phoenix Theatre
Since opening doors in 1996, the New Phoenix Theatre on the Park has gained a reputation for exciting, interdisciplinary theatre: its mission is to present both classical and contemporary plays in new, engaging ways and to explore theatre through the spirit of collaboration, and to re-vitalize its neighborhood around Johnson Park, between the Theater District and the lower West Side.
New Phoenix Cuts New Edges with company-devised work, original shows, NEIL LABUTE and physical MACBETH
Devised, inter-disciplinary work, new plays, and a physicalized MACBETH will shine in the newest season at The New Phoenix Theatre On The Park, the award-winning, interdisciplinary theatre on Buffalos historic Johnson in 2009/2010.
For Curtain Up! 2009, Artistic Director Robert Waterhouse directs FREUD AND THE SANDMAN, which is billed as a new and uncanny entertainment, with puppets by Michele Costa and an original score by Paul Kozlowski, based on a Tale by Hoffmann and an original version by Sigmund Freud. Winner of two New York State Council on the Arts Individual Artist awards (for Waterhouse and Kozlowski), the play is based on the enigmatic story, THE SANDMAN, by E.T..A. Hoffmann.
Founder and Executive Director Richard Lambert offers another devised work, SWEET STREET, October 29 November 21. Described by Lambert as an intersection between the photographs of Milton Rogovin and the music of Leonard Cohen, SWEET STREET explores the issues of homes and homelessness and asks patrons to donate canned food towards food banks in Buffalo.
Kelli Bocock-Natale directs Brian Riggs in MACBETH (March 11 April 3) in a new interpretation of Shakespeares tragedy of greed and murder inspired by the world of physical theatre.
The New Phoenix will conclude its season with IN A DARK DARK HOUSE, by Neil LaBute, on spring dates to be announced. The show, starring Richard Lambert and directed by Joe Natale, is a dark psychological drama of secrets and betrayal. The show premiered in London in 2008.
