First Electric Street Lights In The World
Sitting right in the midst of Historic Allentown is a treasure that not many people know about. On the corner of Allen and College sits the Hosmer building (housing the Antique Man). And on the facade of that same building sit a series of gooseneck lamps that once graced a walkway that led down to the foot of Niagara Falls.
After the stairway collapsed, those original gas lamps were reconfigured into the first electric street lamps in the world. Raw voltage from the nearby power plant turbines was piped directly into the lamps. These exact lamps were lit thus showing the world that the Buffalo-Niagara Region was on the verge of transforming the world virtually overnight.
