Concrete Veggie Garden
Totally contained, 4' x 4' sf, and constructed of plywood, I've been able to plant in 16 sf a veggie garden with corn, italian flat green bush beans, tomatoes, carrots, beets, peppers, cilantro, and basil!
My new home has more concrete than grass. Couldn't bear to take what little green space I have in the backyard from my puppy kids and this was my solution! Thought, how do rooftop and urban gardener's do it? Found the wonderful book, "Square Foot Gardening," by Mel Bartholomew on Amazon.
While the constant rain and cool temps this summer haven't exactly been condusive to growing veggies, I've already harvested fresh basil for fresh pasta, the green beans, jalapeno peppers and two tomatoes. Next weekend, I'll be enjoying fresh beets for dinner!
I plan on constructing more boxes next spring!
