The Aud

Now demolished, Buffalo's War Memorial Auditorium - known affectionately as The Aud - held dear memories for generations of Buffalonians. For non-sports fans, there were concerts - one of the most reproduced photos of Elvis was taken there in 1957. For the rest of us, there were college basketball games that drew thousands, the Buffalo Bisons of the AHL, and ultimately Buffalo Bandits lacrosse championships. And the Sabres. The Aud had many uses, but is associated most with the NHL's Buffalo Sabres, for whose arrival the building was renovated in 1970 by raising the roof to fit more seats. Gilbert Perreault and the French Connection. Tim Horton and Punch Imlach. Pat LaFontaine and Alexander Mogilny. And Dominik Hasek making it look impossible. The chants of "Thank you, Sabres" still hang in the air. Seymour H. Knox III said it best before her last game: "Farewell, old friend."
