The Barkyard

When I moved back to Buffalo in the late 80s, people were talking about creating an off-leash area for dogs. A mere 19 years later The Barkyard (known colloquially as the dog park) set up shop at the north end of LaSalle Park in 2007, and hosts packs of dogs on a regular basis. Even the coldest of winter days found hardy owners and furry friends tossing and tugging toys at the Barkyard, Buffalo's first micropark.

The Barkyard has recently moved from its original, temporary site to more permanent digs a little further south in LaSalle Park. The new & improved Barkyard features trees for shade and wind protection, a separate small dog area, and a double entrance to foil potential escapees. Barkyard Rangers have been trained and scheduled for high-volume times to make sure that rules are enforced (rules can be found at www.thebarkyard.org/) and that everyone has a good Barkyard experience.

Lighting and running water for hydrating and rinsing are next on the agenda, but that's going to take a bit of cash. Fortunately, the Barkyard refuses to hold a fundraiser they wouldn't want to go to. Fundraisers are held throughout the year!
