Lebe

Lebe

Located at the Utica Metro Rail Station, this massive sculpture by George Smith was part of an art installation coinciding with the opening of the Metro Rail in 1985. The entire effort cost $1.15 million - a staggering amount of money for the time.

The work of art seen here is located behind the Metro Rail station at the corner of Main Street and East Utica - obscure from view.

The impressive sculpture, called Lebe, is positioned atop a grassy hill, and is surprisingly viewable from Main Street, though most people don't notice it.

From G. Grobe:

"George's stated inspiration for his soaring Metal Sculpture is in the Dogon society of Africa and their deity, Lebe, a serpent-god. Twisting across the earthen mound at the center of a bus loop, the primary form changes shape as the viewer passes by it. That is the description in the brochure BUFFALO ART IN TRANSIT."
