Boom Days
This is a Saturday event that celebrates the arrival of spring. It's the time that the Ice Boom is pulled out of the mouth of the Niagara River and brought back ashore, thus freeing the ice chunks to float down the Niagara River.
The momentous occasion kicks off on that Thursday - marked by a red ball being dropped from the top of the Peace Bridge. The oldest operational fireboat in the world, The Cotter, signals the occasion by shooting its water cannons into the air as the red ball floats down the Niagara River.
On Saturday, the community partakes in waterfront cleanup events organized by Riverkeeper, followed by a big celebration at the Naval Park (The Red Barn) that evening with food, drinks, live music and ending with fireworks. There is a popular poetry contest that goes hand-in-hand with Boom Days.
