Gardens on Grant
Bet you didn't know that there was a gardening cooperative on Grant Street. Members are given plots of fertile soil where they plant their seeds for harvest. There are some community resources, but in general each person is responsible for his or her plot. Here's the scoop from GoG:
Be sure to make reservations for garden plots at Gardens on Grant, 205 Grant Street. These are 50-100 s.f. plots, fully prepared for planting. It is a fenced lot behind the greenhouse Each plot is provided a storage locker. There is on site rainwater collection for irrigation and composting.
Garden season is fast approaching. My arugula
which overwintered in the cold frame has already begun to grow. Several trees which were impacting the garden last year either have been removed or will be trimmed. The boxwood stumps which created some trouble last year will be ground and more composted manure is on the way.
I've changed the rental period to April through
September. That should allow everything from early peas to fall greens. Last year, with crops in till October 31, I was not able to sow winter cover crops, as was my intention.
If you are planning to take a plot this season, please confirm before April 1. There will be an "Open Garden" on Sunday March 20 from 1-3 pm. In the event of inclement weather, I'll be at Sweetness_7 Cafe, 220 Grant Street.
The severe incidence of late blight in 2009 makes rotation of the affected crops especially important this year.
If you plan to grow tomatoes or other nightshades, please indicate so. I will assign you one of the 7 plots which did not have tomatoes planted last season.
