MAP Greenhouse
Not only does the Massachusetts Avenue Project (MAP) have a Growing Green Garden just around the corner, it has access to a four season greenhouse where volunteers work to plant and harvest produce that is not conducive to growing during the cold winter season.
Next to the greenhouse sits a hen house where chickens are raised in order to harvest their eggs for the community.
This is just one of the many projects on the dynamic site that helps to contribute to an even bigger vision of building and maintaining an Urban Farms Development Center. Even now, within this greenhouse, sits a 2000 gallon hydroponics tilapia fish farm. The practice of self sustainable aquaponics is not as hard as you might think. The dirty water from the fish tank feeds the plants, and the plants filter the ammonia out of the water, which is then returned to the tanks.
There's even a worm farm inside. The worm castings are used to fertilize the plants. In the summer, MAP sets up a food stand in front of the greenhouse and sells affordable produce to the neighborhood. The rations grown inside the greenhouse are equal to the total rations grown on this nine-lot urban farm.
