Breakwall Bird Beach
If you view from on high, this pebble beach takes the shape of a surfboard keel fin. Located at the end of one of the city's protective breakwalls, this little oasis has become a sanctuary of sorts for waterfoul. Thanks to the zebra mussels the water in Lake Erie is crystal clear, though the flies out at the wall are enough to scare anyone away.
This is a good kayak destination as long as you stay in your craft. It's awfully tempting to want to walk along the beach and the wall. I would suggest that you don't. Not only do you not want to frighten the birds away from their nesting ground, it's impossible to get the flies away from you once you get too close.
Bring your binoculars to witness the invasive cormorants. Though not welcome in this region due to their effects on the bass population, they are spectacular birds to watch as they dry their wings in the wind.
