Carvings for a Cause

Carvings for a Cause

It was the morning of October 13th 2006. Throughout the night a heavy wet snow had fallen. It was an unusually early snowstorm for Buffalo - so early in fact that many of the trees had not shed their leaves. You might say that it was the Perfect Storm.

It didn't take residents long to realize the damage that the storm had caused. Much of the damage came in the form of fallen tree branches. Some of the trees were so damaged that they had to come down. Instead of using a bunch of the felled trees for mulch, people rallied to turn them into works of art, and that is how Carvings for a Cause began.

Each of the carvings weigh 2000 pounds, and each depict a regional character meaningful to the city of Buffalo. The carvings can be found all over the city, though Erie Basin Marina is home to the only line-up. Each statue features a description of the character, making the viewing experience both aesthetically pleasing and informative.

Al of the carvings were made possible thanks to individual sponsors. The giant stumps are still being carved to this day.

*During the winter the row of carvings seen here at the Erie Basin Marina, may be found at the corner of Elmwood and Lafayette.
