The Lower Lakes Marine Historical Society
The Lower Lakes Marine Historical Society is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the collection, acquisition, preservation, and exhibition of historical artifacts, documents, iconography, and other memorabilia relating to the marine and maritime history of the great Port of Buffalo, New York, the connecting water ways, the surrounding region, and Lakes Erie and Ontario.
The Society maintains a museum open to the public in the former Howard H. Baker Ship Chandlery located at 66 Erie Street in the City of Buffalo's historic old harbor district.
The Lower Lakes Marine Historical Society Museum is designed to tell stories. The warm, friendly atmosphere is the perfect place to ask these questions.
At the Lower Lakes Museum you can find the stories that contain the answers and friendly volunteers to help answer your questions.
The photographs, illustrations, models, documents, and displays are designed to intrigue the viewer and foster a desire to know more about our maritime history.
We have accomplished our goals and projects through donated services, borrowed equipment, and volunteer labor. As a measure of their dedication and commitment, our members and friends average about 10,000 man hours of free labor each year.
The in-house gift shop has artwork, books, and many other interesting items for sale pertaining to our local and Great Lakes history.
