Buffalo Youth Media Institute
The Buffalo Youth Media Institute is a community history and youth media program targeting the diverse population of young people living in Buffalo and surrounding areas. Students are selected through a competitive application process.
Combining media production, media literacy, and cultural studies in a 6 month curriculum, our youth producers work with professional filmmakers and members of the community to create their own self-directed documentaries about Buffalo.
Each year the Buffalo Youth Media Institute chooses a theme that allows students to explore local history, culture and social issues. This years theme is Buffalo Life Stories and each student, or pair of students, will choose a local person of interest as the focus of their documentary.
During the program students will:
* Write, shoot and edit a documentary using professional equipment and techniques.
* Learn how to evaluate and critique media.
* Learn more about the Greater Buffalo community and its history through field trips, presentations and workshops.
