Commodore Perry defeated the British naval fleet at the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. This statue was erected by the State of New York Perry Victory Centennial Committee and was dedicated at the annual reunion of the 100th New York Veterans Association.

Perry stands dressed in period garb; jacket, trousers, and a shirt open at the collar. The subject's legs are spread apart, his arms are at his sides, and his proper left hand grasps a sword affixed to his belt. Perry appears to overlook Lake Erie as if viewing an approaching fleet.
