Columbus stands dressed in period garb; hat, britches, coat and vest. The inscription on the front of the base reads: "Christopher Columbus, erected and dedicated by the federation of Italian-American Societies and public-spirited citizens in the City of Buffalo."

There are three ships carved on the other three sides of the base. The inscription on the proper left side reads: "The Caravel Nina." The inscription on the proper right side reads: "The Caravel Pinta." The inscription on the rear of the base reads: "The Flagship Santa Maria."
