Bird Island Pier
This may look like just an ordinary breakwall to most people, but look closely and you will see that there are people walking along it. It's called Bird Island Pier and since 1860 it has acted as a divider between the rushing Niagara River and the calm waters of the Black Rock Channel.
The entrance point of the pier is located at the foot of West Ferry - the southern end of Broderick Park. While the pier offers protection for boaters (from Black Rock Lock to the southern end of LaSalle Park), it also offers a scenic walking trail for Buffalo residents.
Be warned: Whatever distance you travel along the pier, that is the same distance that you will have to backtrack, as the entrance is the same as the exit (Broderick Park). The length of Bird Island Pier is approximately 2 miles.
The section of the pier seen here is located across the way from the West Side Rowing Club (finish line for the races) and Frank Lloyd Wright Boathouse. Over the years, many people have talked about the benefit of building a pedestrian bridge near this access point that would bridge the pier and the mainland.
