Community Music School

Founded in 1924, Community Music School offers individual lessons and classes for over 1,100 youngsters and adults each year in multiple locations.

CMS purchased its current Elmwood Avenue home in 1959 after brief stays in other sites on the west side of Buffalo.

Last year CMS served 850 students from 6 months to 86 years old and beyond through instructional programs in the Elmwood Avenue building; satellites at the Amherst Community Church in Snyder, Jewish Community Center in Getzville, St. Matthias Church in East Aurora, Faith United Methodist Church in Lancaster, First Presbyterian Church in Lockport and Seneca Street United Methodist Church in South Buffalo; In The City series (music and arts classes) with Bryant Street Studio and 21st Century Community Learning Centers' programs at Southside Elementary School in South Buffalo and Truman Elementary and Martin Road Schools in Lackawanna.

80% of the School's students are children and 20% of the School's students are adults, 29% are minorities and those in need receive financial assistance through investments from the United Way, foundations, corporations and individual donors.

35% of our students received assistance or free instruction because of an investment from United Way and funding from foundations, corporations and individual donors as well as the NYS Education Department.

Last year CMS also reached 2,640 people through 51 free or low-cost concerts. These included CMS Neighborhood Concerts, CMS and Chromatic Club's Sunday Concerts at the Montante Cultural Center, Student Recitals (inhouse and outreach) and other special appearances.

CMS Neighborhood Concerts feature local, professional ensembles and target underserved populations in neighborhood locations. These are sponsored by the Arts Council Decentralization Program with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts together with money from corporations and private donors and cultural funding from the County of Erie.

This year CMS is continuing its collaboration with the Chromatic Club for Sunday Concerts at the Montante Cultural Center. Concerts are described on our home page. Master classes, Student Honors Recital, Recital Fests in December and June, monthly student recitals, performance classes and master classes round out CMS performance activities.
