Wilson Street Urban Farm
The Wilson Street Urban Farm started off as a controversial undertaking on the East Side of the city. Thankfully, the community got behind this inspirational project thus allowing Mark and Janice Stevens to operate an organic produce resource for the community. Here are just a handful of the offerings:
Lettuce (red leaf,green leaf,romaine): $1.00/bunch
Onions: $.25/apiece
Chinese cabbage: $2.00/head
Herbs (parsley, basil, cilantro, peppermint, spearmint, chives, garlic chives, sage, thyme): $.50/bunch
Beets: $.25 for 2
Zucchini: $ . 50/apiece
Green tomatoes: $.25 for 2
Swiss chard: $2.00/bunch
From Mark and Janice: "Wilson Street Urban Farm is a family-operated urban garden. Our goal is to make fresh, local produce readily available to residents on the East Side. We encourage community participation and desire to help people in the neighborhood reconnect to the environment and to each other."
The photo seen here was included in one of Janice's blog entries (head to their website to read more). This particular entry read, "Things are ripening around here. Last week, I made pickles. Today we made salsa. That okra I commented about earlier has fruited and we ate some today. It grows really fast! I put it in a tomato and rice dish and, since this is the first time I have grown it or cooked with it, everyone at the table commented on it. Our boy from Liberia said he used to eat it back in Africa." - Janice
