El Museo Francisco Oller Y Diego Rivera
Imagine planning a special day with your family to visit a fine arts museum and not finding a single reference to your own culture or a single face like your own.
El Museo is the area's only not-for-profit arts organization dedicated to the exhibition of fine art by Latin/caribbean, African-American and other artists of color.
Celeste Lawson, executive director of the Arts Council of Buffalo and Erie County, calls El Museo "Western New York's most prolific visual arts venue to resonate the beauty and power of Latin, Asian, African and Indigenous voices."
Begun in 1981 as a grass-roots group, El Museo first mounted shows on Buffalo's West Side. After incorporating in 1986 we expanded our mission to showcase the work of all artists of color who are not readily exhibited in or by the mainstream art community.
In 1997 El Museo acquired its first permanent home at 91 Allen Skeet. Close to downtown, our Gallery bridges the predominantly Hispanic West Side and the African-American East Side, offering an attractive and accessible space where we can always be found.
From the Gallery we continue to operate our Satellite Sites program, bringing art to neighborhoods receiving few, if any, other arts services.
El Museo is in the business of building bridges. We foster local talent, using professional exhibitions to introduce new artists to the community. We reinvigorate inner-city neighborhoods with the art of local, national and international artists, giving the people of these communities the opportunity to see their own culture and experiences reflected in fine arts.
We educate the mainstream population by enhancing public knowledge, understanding and appreciation for such art. We believe that tolerance and respect for differences among people follow such appreciation.
