94.9 WTF Free Radio Buffalo
If you live on the West Side of the city, here is a special treat. Call it underground... call it pirate radio... call it WTF. Whatever you call it, just know that the lads who run the station are from Alaska and they now call Buffalo home. From 94.9 fan, Scott Washburn:
For anyone who is or ever was a fan of college radio, the listening choice in the Buffalo area has always been slim at best. Granted the stations you might be familiar with are local institutions at this point and are still among my personal favorites if I'm going to listen to radio at all. Well good news to you my friends, there's a new station that I'll strongly encourage you check out, and it's 94.9 WTF (yes WTF!) FM PIRATE RADIO!!!
I heard about it from THE local Guru of what's what in the City of Buffalo and was told that if I had ever liked WBNY 91.3 that I should check out 94.9, and he was right! WTF is the station ID and WTF is right! In the first few hours of listening I heard everything from 40's and 50's be-bop to Gay Bikers on Acid and The Butthole Surfers, and somehow...it all seemed to work!
Tossed in here and there was a blue-grassy number, some hip-hop, The Beatles, Menu Chow, need I say more?
It seems that the founder(s) of the station came across an unused, open channel on the FM dial and decided to take it over and create their own FM station right here on Buffalo's West Side. It's such a great "alternative", if you will, to the heaps of trash stations that clog up the radio waves these days and unless you like to hear a lot commercials and nonsense then do check it out. I wasn't quite sure what I'd hear when I first tuned in and the portable radio I was trying to find it on is not the best at receiving signals.
I came across a Louis Armstrong number and decided that my radio couldn't find the station. Next thing I know the genre shifted to some awesome 90's club style acid house piece that I can't name. As the day went on I found myself texting friends to tell them to tune it in and check it out! I suggest you do that too, see what you think, I know I'm HOOKED on PIRATE RADIO 94.9 WTF FM!!!! ARrrr!
