Navigetter is easy. Enter a search into the search field up top... search for anything you wish - sushi, cafe, public art, live music. Or click around on some of the pins that already appear on the map. Those are the most recent posts. Click 'What's New' and the left hand column will show most recent posts added. Match the pin color in the post to the same colored pin on the map. Or click on the name of the post to single out a pin. The question mark will get you back to this screen. Try clicking on a channel (like Allentown or Dinner). Be sure to try the 'Hot Spots' feature to search for category symbols like haunted, patios or 'green'? The sun symbol will show you things to do on a summer's day, while the snowflake symbol will show you what there is to do on a winter's day. There are over 1200 posts entered into the site, though you can only see 20 post results (or pins on the map) at any given time. Click >> to get the next set of 20 posts/pins. Search for parks, public art, shops, restaurants, lofts... you name it and it's being mapped.
Recently added features are: Send to a friend, email, favorites, directions, multiple images, and RSS feed.
Want to add your own content? First conduct a search for what it is you want to add - chances are it's already there. If it's not,
1) Join as a registered user.
2) Look for your email confirmation.
3) Go back to Navigetter and sign in
4) Click the 'Post' bar (on the far right) in order to add something about the city that is important to you.
*A post is NOT a one-word listing or a website URL. It is a brief description of a destination such as an eatery or a salon. Search to see if someone has already posted on the same subject by entering the title into the Navigetter search field, or by clicking on the appropriate subject channel. Submissions are reviewed on a daily basis, and may be taken down if lacking in content and/or key information or if faulty in accuracy and duplication. Site administrator reserves the right to edit, temporarily label as 'draft', add/subtract (Wiki style) or completely remove a posting.
Think the map takes up too much of the screen? To toggle the split screen in either direction, click on the grab bar between the content side and the map side (it's got two perpendicular stripes). Just pull to the left or the right for more content or more map.
Remember that when you register as a user, that gives you access to features like 'My Hood'. In order to post content you must be signed in. Then it's as easy as clicking on the 'Post' button and inputting your favorite business, mural, gallery, etc.
It's time to learn about Buffalo and/or show others
what makes living or visiting so great - a website for the people, by the
people.
Once you join, you can place a pin anywhere on the map. As a member you can: Create a profile, add reviews, start or join conversations, grade entries and publish photos. To get all the free benefits, click here.
One of the benefits of signing in is the "My Hood" feature. When clicked upon, Navigetter shows you all of the the pins in your neighborhood (according to Zip Code). If your search results pulls up multiple pins, you can always click on the name of the landmark (in the left column) and Navigetter will locate your exact destination by pointing out the single pin location on the map. Experiment with the search bar to find results for what interests you the most. Search for jeans or yoga.
TAGS
If you want your post to show up when a particular 'Hot Spot' or designated channel is clicked upon, then make sure your tags correlate with the navigation titles. Some Hot Spot tags are: Cafe, WiFI, Car Share, Blue Bike, Bike Lane, Cold, Warm, Architecture and Green. Each of the Green Channels doubles as a tag as well. For example: Hertel, Elmwood, Grant and West Side. The date tag is only for specific events.
No search results? Got something to say? Pin it.
To place a pin, you must be signed in. By hitting the "Post" bar
above the map, you can create a pin for anything, anywhere in WNY. When a pin is initially placed, it can be picked up and moved as long as the post has not been submitted. You will notice that as the pin is moved, the address box in the left column is automatically updated. If you want to input the exact address in the address box, you may do so. When the address has been added and 'Locate' has been clicked upon, a pin will show up on the map - don't forget to add 'Buffalo, NY' when inputting an address, as some streets and road names do appear in more than one city or town. Pushpins are automatically designated colors that help to identify them. Look for the pink pin in the search result and then find it on the map.
Click on a pin (in the left hand column) and the rest of the pins (on the map) disappear, making it easier to find what you're looking for. Got something to say? Hit reply to add your own comments.
Don't forget to add 'tags' to your entry (in the designated field) - remember, tags are descriptive words that help other members locate your posting. Essentially, tags are words that best define the topic you're posting on. They are separated by commas - look at some of the other posts to see what sort of tags people are using. The more tags, the more your post will show up in results. You can even add your own tags when replying to a post. Please don't abuse the tag system. If your post is time-sensitive, be sure to add a date tag so that others can pull it up when using the calendar. Then add a photo (click on photos to enlarge) or even a URL in the body of the message. People tend to explore content that is associated with an image. And don't just add a business name and website without adding a description.
Interact - Review visitors' comments, add your own two cents or grade an entry. The most popular pins, according tp traffic and grade, will appear early on in search results.
Locking and Unlocking The Left Hand Column
When there are no words entered into the search engine, magnify onto a neighborhood using the + tool. When you are focused solely on a concentrated area, click Unlock Posts - Browse Map found at the bottom right side of the screen. In this mode, as you browse around the map, you will notice that new posts on the left suddenly pop up as you run across them. Start by pulling the map in any direction with your mouse. Then, click Lock Posts - Browse Map again if you want to lock in information that you have come across. It takes some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty handy.
If
you ever get stuck, the top left Navigetter logo will always refresh the site
when clicked upon. If you have additional questions, problems, feedback,
feel free to send us an email to info@navigetter.com.
Tip: The tiny down arrow next to the search engine will pull up a) the most popular searches on the site b) a toggle between calendar and weather. If you leave the toggle on weather, then you'll always have a handy place to find the latest forecast.
Tip: At the end of a post, the Green Tags act as micro channels. If someone adds a tag such as 'Vegan', then when you click on it all of the other posts with a 'Vegan' tag will appear. There are some very interesting tags such as 'Coming Soon' or 'Concept' - look for them or enter the key words into the search field.
Tip: Sometimes you will run across posts that tell you that there are multiple posts at one location. That means that more than one pin have been dropped at one location. If you click on that orange notice, the rest of the posts at that location will appear.
Tip: Although the Hybrid and Satellite map features are convenient at times, it's easiest to locate the different color pins when viewing in Map mode. The little 'Hand' symbol found in the center of the four directional arrows refreshes the map for you.
Tip: There are advertisers on the site. Please support them, because they are supporting us. Click on their ads and see what they are all about. Or become an advertiser yourself. Look for the ad link at the bottom right of the screen.
